I had never hated my job more than I did the moment Clark walked into my office the following Thursday night. What was supposed to be date night for Genesis and me.

This wouldn’t be good.

“Brandon, my boy. How are things?”

I stood, fighting the urge to scowl at the man. I’d been planning to leave, having not been home to have dinner with my girl in days. I’d promised her I wouldn’t be late tonight. I had even made a reservation at the best restaurant on the island so we could spend some serious time together without being naked. We’d be run through the gossip mills by morning, but I didn’t care. I wanted to show her off, to take her someplace nice, to spoil her a little.

I had a feeling I was about to break my promise.

“Things are well, Clark.” I shook his hand, darting a glance over his shoulder as my assistant snuck toward the front door. I couldn’t blame her. “What can I do for you so late?”

“Late? Since when is seven late? I thought you were a full-timer.”

I choked back my automatic—and highly unprofessional—response and tried to smile at his boisterous laugh, but I couldn’t. The only thing on my mind, the only thought in my head, was Genesis sitting at home waiting for me. Probably all dressed up. Excited, even. I was an asshole.

“Yes, well.” I took a deep breath, refocusing. “It’s been a long week.” Too long, in fact. I’d spent too much time away from home. Something I’d rarely thought about while it was happening. Sure, there had been times when I’d missed events for Evie over the years, but I’d been busy trying to make sure she had everything she could want. Everything she could need. The best life I could give her.

But with Genesis, things were different. I hated my long hours, hated knowing she was alone and probably lonely without me. Evie craved her solitude—she loved the quiet house, needed time alone to recharge herself. Genesis—well, she wasn’t Evie. She sought out people to interact with, and her vibrant personality drew them to her. She was like the first bit of sun after a cold winter, warming everyone, making people smile along with her. And I had been soaking her in this past week. Instead of jumping up in the morning to get to work, wanting to close every deal as quickly as I could, I lingered in bed with her. I lost my concentration during the day and found myself daydreaming about her. I spent hours wanting to be around Genesis instead of my team, needing to feel her touch. Her warmth. And she needed my attention as well.

After almost twenty years of my nose to the grindstone for Clark, it was time for me to focus on things outside of Wilkinson Properties.

“I hope whatever you need can be dealt with tomorrow. I was just about to head home for a late dinner.”

Clark wasn’t as good at hiding his scowl as I was.
